During the Victorian Era, people would entertain themselves through hobbies, skills, activities and those who could, through paid entertainment. Since many people were able to pay for entertainment, they were able to support thousands of professional entertainers. Many of the sports played during the Victorian Era are still played today. These include soccer (football), golf, tennis, and boxing. Public schools became "muscular Christianity", Christian schools committed to physical health. They were inspired by rowing, cricket, and soccer teams. Music was very important to Victorians, no matter if they were from a high class society or working class. Many people had music boxes and they loved to make their own music, but hearing live music was a precious unforgettable thing. Live public performances included: concerts, operas, and even ventriloquist acts. Theater was flourishing throughout the Victorian Era. Events were often 5-6 hours due to having 3-5 plays/events. Shakespeare was huge during this era, and the Victorians would never get tired of it. During this era, women were finally able to act in plays. They would often take male roles. Original texts from the Gregorian period were restored during this time.
